Impact Champions

World Rugby remains committed to empowering more women in our sport and building stronger systems to support the global development of rugby. As part of this work, the first Impact Champions initiative was launched in Africa in 2025, designed to support future women leaders in the region, both in their professional development and through their work to deliver targeted women’s rugby initiatives in the region.

World Rugby’s first Impact Champions programme was delivered in partnership with UK Sport, involving twelve women from six African Unions. The Impact Champions received professional development training, mentoring and seed funding towards a targeted women’s rugby initiative delivered in their country. To conclude the year long programme participants travelled to England to attend the  Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025.

As part of the Impact Champions initiative, champions from each of the six Unions were invited to present on their work to drive the women’s game at a private event in London. Guests included representatives from IWG Women and Girls in Sport, the British Olympic Association, ChildFund Rugby, the South African High Commission and the Embassy of Madagascar. Two of the Impact Champions also took part in a panel about their projects in front of a global rugby audience at World Rugby’s General Assembly.

Participants also attended World Rugby’s Women’s Rugby Global Summit where they had the opportunity to connect with a global network of stakeholders in rugby and continue their professional development, whilst building their expertise to help grow the game back in their home countries.
